Steve's Fiction

S I T E   M A P

Thanks to the magic of modern technology, I can scan in and tidy, rather than have to completely retype, to publish some of the fiction I wrote in the late 70s as an undergraduate at Cambridge. It's a mix of fantasy and SF, with the borders blurred in each case. Some of it is also a bit laced with adolescent angst, but the fact that I can still bear to read it after all these years must mean that it shows some promise.

Partly as a result of having completely burned out of roleplaying, the creative juices seem to be flowing back into the old streams, so I am starting doing more of this. That and modern technology - using a Handspring with the QED text editor and the MessagEase keyboard and stamp for jotting the rough draft has been very convenient: I find it easier to tap out on the tiny keyboard emulator than scribbling, and I can transfer it to other computers without needing to retype.

SF

4th Millenium: The Nancy Wolf stories

The main novel is also available from the Memoware archives as a PalmReader format e-book (look under sci-fi dated 03/11/2002 — about 125–150 from the oldest). It's in this format as it is the only one I've found with some markup (bold and italic, but, alas, no fixed-width font) and internal hyperlinking, and arbitrary-length books that has a both a free full function reader and book compiler. (Plucker is close, but breaks the flow every 32k bytes) You'll need a recent version of the free Palm Reader from Palm Digital Media, formerly Peanut Press, then install the .pdb file to your Palm as usual.

Also from the ETEXT Archives in PDF format.

Near Future

a new work, in first draft. Suffers a bit from having to keep track of what the near future brings, alas. This is a work in progress; Chapters 1–6 are present in draft form, as is part of chapter 7. A Nancy Wolf story, though she's an “NPC ” in this one.

Sad kyotaku - Dirty Pair fanfic

Short pieces of fluff — the stories, that is, not the Lovely Angels themselves :-) . Some shoujo-ai.

Neon Genesis Evangelion fanfic

Fantasy

Contemporary: The Jennifer Benchley stories

These are set in Cambridge, UK, were written in the late 70s and looked forward to the late 80s.

Fantastic worlds: The "Caerthemon, the Sorcerer" stories

Like Moving Day, these are also available from the Memoware archives as a PalmReader format e-book (look under sci-fi dated on 03/18/2002 — about 125–150 from the oldest; last spotted at #50 in popularity ); and the ETEXT Archives in PDF format.
